Things to Keep in Mind

Here are three things to keep in mind when purchasing your egg chair:

1. Material

For the most-part egg chairs, these days are made from polyethylene resin wicker (also known as all-weather wicker) which is a synthetic material made to look like natural rattan wicker but is stronger and more durable. These chairs are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

I’ve also included a few egg chairs made from other materials including fabric, aluminum, and polypropylene (a type of hard plastic).

2. Weight Capacity

The egg chairs in this guide have a weight capacity ranging from 265-628lbs. Check the comparison table at the end of the article to see the weight capacities side-by-side.

3. What’s Included?

Some of the egg chairs come with a stand included whereas others include hanging hardware for hanging from trees, beams, or the ceiling. For those that don’t come with a stand, a normal hammock chair stand is usually suitable.

Keep reading for my full review of each recommendation with an unbiased outline of the pros and cons each chair offers.

At the end of the article, I’ve also put together a full comparison table with each of the products and their key specs to compare side-by-side.

Best Overall: Greenstell

Pros:

Stylish woven look
Reasonably priced
Great for indoors and out

Cons:

Cushions aren’t too plump

The best hanging egg chair is the Greenstell chair. Compared to the other chairs, it has a stylish look thanks to the woven polyethylene resin wicker and is versatile in where it can be used, suitable for both indoors and outside. Despite being my top pick, it’s still very reasonably priced too.

It’s a solid build, made from polyethylene resin wicker (also known as all-weather wicker) which is very common for patio furniture as an alternative to natural rattan wicker so it’s suitable for both indoors and out. The weight capacity of the chair is 300lbs so it’s suitable for one person.

It comes with two cushions, although these aren’t as plump as I’d like them to be so I’d recommend adding your own too. It’s available in either black or brown material and with the choice of red, blue, or brown cushions giving a total of 6 color combinations so you’ll be able to find something that matches your décor.

The product shown here doesn’t come with a stand although the manufacturer recommends pairing it with their Greenstell chair stand (Hint: you can save with the combo deals found here and here although you have fewer color combinations). If you’re planning to hang it from a ceiling, it comes with a chain and hooks to do so.

Best for Outdoors: Barton

Pros:

Stand included
Thick weather-resistant cushion
Sturdy and durable

Cons:

(Joint) Lowest weight rating
Tapered at the bottom

If you’re looking for an egg chair with a stand to use outdoors, then this chair from Barton is an excellent choice. The chair itself is made from polyethylene resin wicker wrapped around a steel frame like most others in this guide.

It comes with a  powder-coated steel stand that has 4 legs which allow it to remain sturdy on a variety of outdoor surfaces from patio to grass. The design means that it can remain balanced even when the ground is uneven.

The stand is suitable for one person only with a 265lb weight limit (among the lowest for an egg chair), although there are several reviews from people who have exceeded this with no problem.

Also included is a 6” thick polyester cushion that’s UV and weather-resistant. The cushion comes in a choice of three colors; beige, white, and cream.

You’ll notice that the chair doesn’t have a fully circular shape like the others but is tapered off at the bottom. This means that the overall height of the chair is among the smallest at 104cm (41”) so it might not be the best choice for tall people.

Budget Pick: Art to Real

Pros:

Cheapest egg chair
High weight capacity
Unfolds to be stored away easily

Cons:

Less comfortable than the synthetic rattan wicker chairs
Only suitable for indoor use

If you’re on a budget, then the Art to Real egg chair is the cheapest one on the market and by quite a difference too. Unlike the others which are mostly made from polyethylene resin wicker, this one is made from aluminum tubing which is a cheaper material and allows the price point to be lower.

The downside to this is that it’s less comfortable than the other chairs so you’ll have to make sure you use the included cushions so that the metal doesn’t press into your body. The cushions are available in blue or orange depending on your preference.

Keep in mind that it may not be as weather-resistant as the other chairs so I’d recommend it for indoor use or if you’re planning to use it outdoors, try to bring it inside when not in use.

Despite being one of the cheaper chairs, it’s also one of the strongest with a 365lb weight rating which puts it in second place among the chairs aimed at one person.

Most Stylish: Modway

Pros:

Woven wicker gives a stylish and modern look
Cushion available in 9 colors
Stand is compact making it ideal for indoors

Cons:

Weight limit of 265lbs is (joint) lowest

If you have got an eye for design, then the Modway egg chair is a great way to add a touch of style to your home. The chair and stand are suitable for indoor or outdoor use and have a weight capacity 265lbs which means only one person can use the chair at a time.

Like the other chairs, the Modway is also made from polyethylene resin wicker which has been styled to look like natural rattan wicker. However, rather than the rigid straight line patterns used in most other egg chairs, Modway have gone for a curvy woven appearance that gives the chair more character and a modern feel.

The chair comes with a plump fade-resistant cushion which they claim is suitable for all-weather. The cushion is available in a total of 9 different colors so you won’t struggle to match it with your other furniture.

Included is a steel stand designed to perfectly accommodate the chair. Steel is one of the stronger materials for stands like this and the C-shape design keeps it compact so you could use it in smaller spaces indoors without worrying about stubbing your toe on it.

Best for Larger People: Christopher Knight Leasa

Pros:

Highest weight capacity for a one-person egg chair
Wider and deeper than average
Comes with a thick pillow

Cons:

Above-average price

Next up, the Christopher Knight Leasa chair is another egg chair with a stand. Like the previous chairs, it’s also made from polyethylene resin wicker, although it is a lighter grey color rather than your typical darker colors.

It’s notable as one of the strongest chairs on the market with a high weight capacity of 400lbs which is only exceeded by the more expensive Joybase stand that’s aimed at two people. This means that the Leasa is very durable and particularly well suited to heavier people.

The chair itself is one of the widest on the market at around 97cm (38”). It’s also very deep for an egg chair at 69cm (27”) which provides plenty of room to curl up. It comes with a grey thick polyester cushion which is water and UV-resistant.

The stand itself is made from Iron which tends to fare well outdoors, although isn’t as strong as steel which is used in the other stands. The O-shaped base is great for both indoor and outdoor use, although would be better suited to flat surfaces.

Natural Rattan: Kouboo

Pros:

Only egg chair made with natural rattan
Slim profile is great for small spaces
Very strong and durable when used indoors

Cons:

Only suitable for indoor use

So far, all of the recommendations have been made from polyethylene resin which mimics the texture of natural rattan. However, this hanging chair from Kouboo is made from natural rattan which is why I had to include it on the list.

From the image above, you’ll notice that it’s not quite a full egg shape chair like the others I’ve shared, however, it offers a more minimal style that will look just as good and still offers a comfortable space to hang out in your home.

The chair has been handcrafted from natural rattan and has a distinctly bohemian style which can become a focal point of any room. The natural material isn’t weatherproof like the synthetic material used in the other chairs so this one is only suitable for indoor use.

The chair is slimmer than a typical egg chair so it’s great if you have a small space that you’re trying to kit out such as a reading nook. It comes with a white cushion and hemp rope for hanging, although no hanging hardware is included.

Best for Two People: Joybase

Pros:

Can easily hold two people
High weight capacity
Free waterproof cover

Cons:

Most expensive by a long way
Takes up more space

The Joybase chair is the only hanging egg chair for two people I reviewed. Not only does it have a generous weight capacity of 628lbs which is more than enough for two people, but it’s also extra wide at 145cm (57”) compared to an average of around 84cm (33”) for the other chairs in this list.

The included stand is made from powder-coated steel which is a strong material commonly used in stands for outdoor furniture.

The stand can support the extra weight capacity of the chair due to two chains rather than your usual one chain. However, this does mean that swinging is limited to one direction whereas most egg chairs can swing freely in any direction.

The chair comes with a 5” thick high-density sponge cushion for additional comfort. The stand is available in two colorways: black chair/stand with blue cushion or bronze chair/stand with beige cushion.

As you’d expect being the biggest and strongest egg chair, it’s also the most expensive. But they do throw in a heavy-duty waterproof cover to keep it protected in the winter months or when not in use.

Egg Chair With Legs: Best Choice

Pros:

No need for installation of hooks or chains to hang it
Larger chair dimensions than hanging chairs
Easy to move around

Cons:

Cannot swing like a hanging egg chair

As well as a huge range of hanging egg chairs, there’s also the option for an egg chair with legs such as this one from Best Choice.

Choosing an egg chair with legs instead of a hanging egg chair has pros and cons. On the one hand, you don’t need to install any hanging points or have a bulky stand, but on the other hand, you don’t get the relaxing feeling as the chair rocks.

At 102cm (40”) wide, the Best Choice egg chair is wider than most other one-person chairs which are usually about 84cm (33”) so it’s great for tall people or shorter people can even sit across its width or curl up in it.  To add extra comfort, it comes with four cushions in a choice of black, ivory, or blue.

The chair has a 440lb weight capacity which is higher than similar-sized hanging egg chairs but it’s still easy to move should you need to clear the space or clean around it.

Best for Kids: IKEA Ps Lömsk

Pros:

Simple to assemble
Polypropylene can easily be wiped down
360° swivel and pull down hood

Cons:

Only suitable for children

If your kids want to get in on the egg chair action too (and why wouldn’t they!), then the IKEA Ps Lömsk egg chair might be a great addition to their bedroom.

This is another freestanding egg chair, however, unlike the Best Choice chair, it has been designed so that it can still swivel much like a chair hung from the ceiling only without any danger.

The chair is made from polypropylene which is a solid plastic so you’ll be able to wipe it clean with warm water to remove the dirt and stains that will undoubtedly appear.

One thing I really love is that it has a pull-down hood which kids will love for creating a secret hiding spot. Of course, being an IKEA product, putting it together from flat-pack will be a breeze.

Most Portable: Radita

Pros:

Hinges allow it to be collapsed
One of the cheapest egg chairs (without stand)
Comes with all required hanging hardware

Cons:

265lb weight limit is (joint) lowest

The final egg chair on my list comes from Radita. I’ve included this one thanks to a unique feature that allows it to be folded down easily. This is great if you’re looking to store it away for the winter months or you want to move it to a new location.

Folding the chair is possible thanks to clever hinges around each edge so you don’t even need any special tools to assemble or disassemble it.

Like many of the other chairs here, it’s also made from polyethylene resin wicker so it’s reasonably weatherproof. The weight limit is 265lbs which is among the lowest of those reviewed.

The Radita egg chair doesn’t come with a stand, however, it comes with all the hardware for hanging indoors or outside and has a typical width of 29” so it will fit on most standard-sized stands.

Related Questions

Why Are Egg Chairs So Expensive?

Egg chairs are more expensive than other hanging chairs because their shape is difficult to mass-produce and they are typically made from expensive materials such as polyethylene resin wicker which is suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

Cheaper alternatives made from aluminum are available, but these can compromise on comfort.

Are Egg Chairs Comfortable?

Egg chairs are very comfortable for relaxing in a cozy nook in your home or backyard. They will typically be hung from a ceiling or stand which allows them to gently rock too, this has been proven to help you relax.

How Much Space Does an Egg Chair Need?

The amount of space your egg chair needs will depend upon the size and hanging method. For an egg chair hanging from the ceiling, you should ensure that it has at least 30cm (1ft) of space in all directions, although 60cm (2ft) would be optimum.

Are Egg Chairs for Indoors or Out?

Most egg chairs are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use because they are made from weatherproof materials. However, many come with attached cushions which might not be suitable to leave outside and those made from natural rattan should only be used indoors.

It’s always best to check the manufacturer’s recommendations on the product listing or included instructions to be sure.
